Event Description

Texas Association for Multicultural Counseling and Development- Pray on It: OCD from a Multicultural Lens

Program Summary:
Mom told me that we don't discuss Uncle Luis. 'He's not right in the head,' she says, and he need to keep praying to God to cure him. What about the saying, 'cleanliness is next to Godliness?' Do any of those sound like any of your BIPOC clients? How many of them want to admit that there are issues that you as a mental health provider can help treat?
According to the International OCD foundation, OCD strikes 1 in 100 adults in the United States. However, based on their wording, the numbers appear to be underreported. Some posit that is because of a reluctance of individuals to come forward and seek treatment. OCD strikes frequently and is equal opportunity in its selection of individuals.
From a cultural perspective, the stigma is real and mental health treatment alone is not trusted. Therefore, how are we as clinicians supposed to handle the reluctance to seek treatment? How are we going to become adept at recognizing when a patient has OCD and the multicultural nuances that go along with it?
