The A in LGBTQIA+, More than Just an Ally, but an Advocate 3 CE

Affirming care significantly increases outcomes around mental health for LGBTQIA+ youth (Riggle, et al., 2014; Tordoff et al., 2022). LGBTQIA+ youth are facing state laws that ultimately increase risk factors. LGBTQIA+ youth facing negative state policies are found to experience more bullying, substance use, and an increase in mental health symptoms (Watson et al., 2021). With the right education around advocacy, clinicians can be taught affirming care inside and outside the therapy room. As many LGBTQIA+ clients fear counseling due to politics and policy (Gonzalez et al., 2022), – counselors can offer coping strategies, advocacy, and actionable steps.
