Event Description

Affirming care significantly increases outcomes around mental health for LGBTQIA+ youth (Riggle, et al., 2014; Tordoff et al., 2022). LGBTQIA+ youth are facing state laws that ultimately increase risk factors. LGBTQIA+ youth facing negative state policies are found to experience more bullying, substance use, and an increase in mental health symptoms (Watson et al., 2021). With the right education around advocacy, clinicians can be taught affirming care inside and outside the therapy room. As many LGBTQIA+ clients fear counseling due to politics and policy (Gonzalez et al., 2022), – counselors can offer coping strategies, advocacy, and actionable steps. 3.0 CE presented by Rachel Longoria

Learning Objectives:

1. Explore general identities of the LGBTQIA+ community, including how accessibility can hinder the LGBTQIA+ population.
2. Discuss two tangible youth centered activities to advocate for identities in the session with clients.
3. Discuss and explore public policy and how to be an advocate outside of the therapy room.
