Event Description

Although the Code of Ethics doesn't specifically address best practices for business in private practice, counselors are bound to professional responsibility around record keeping and knowledge of the law. This presentation includes review of material on current tax information for professional counselors in private practice, which records to keep, and differences in 1099 and W-2 positions. Information from the ACA Code of Ethics, Texas LPC Rules, and IRS guidelines for small business will be discussed. Handouts will be provided.
Learning Objectives-
1) Participants will examine best practices for record keeping for filing taxes as a counselor in private practice in accordance with the ACA Code of Ethics, the Texas LPC Rules, and IRS tax laws.
2) Participants will be able to list at least three differences between 1099 positions and W-2 positions with consideration for tax planning and filing as a professional counselor.
3) Participants will be able to describe itemized deductions and list at least four of the deductions in relation to tax filing.
