Program Information

Clinical Necessity and Determinations for Level of Care
This presentation will provide an overview of the three levels of care and what clinical necessity looks like for meeting each level. Participants will have the opportunity to review three case studies from two major clinical areas (SUD and Eating Disorders) and examine what documentation should look like when a higher level of care is clinically indicated. Types of questions for assessment and an overview of related diagnostic codes will be discussed. The didactic portion includes information on cultural competence around diagnosis and culturally responsive conversations around appropriate levels of care.

Learning Objectives:
1. Participants will examine the differences among three levels of care: Intensive Outpatient (IOP), Partial Hospitalization (PHP), and Inpatient/Residential (IP/RTC), and what determines the clinical necessity for each level.
2. Participants will examine the importance of documentation in justifying the level of care for patients (clients) needing more than traditional outpatient counseling.
3. Participants will identify at least two ways clinical assessment for level of care must be culturally responsive.
4. Participants will learn three ways to document clinical necessity through a review of case studies and practice assessments.
