Event Description

Eating disorders affect more than 30 million Americans and have one of the highest mortality rates of all mental illnesses. Eating disorders are difficult to treat due to high levels of ambivalence and complexities impacting medical, psychological, and social wellbeing. With early identification and intervention from a multidisciplinary team, prognosis is improved and recovery is possible. It is essential that educators are equipped to contribute to early intervention and connect students and caregivers to receive the evidence-based care needed to treat eating disorders.

Learning Objectives:
1: Participants will gain an understanding of the diagnostic criteria for eating disorders in the DSM-5 and explore the biopsychosocial factors that contribute to their development. 2: Participants will be able to identify individuals and populations who are marginalized and vulnerable to developing eating disorders.
3: Participants will be able to analyze effective therapeutic approaches supported by evidence for treating eating disorders, while exploring the importance of a multidisciplinary team in providing comprehensive care.
