Event Description
As more language is developed to identify with, the expansion of affirming care is imperative. The LGBTGEQIAP+ community has identified more language to be more affirming, more importantly, researchers are finding a decrease in suicidality and depressive symptoms when just utilizing affirming language and chosen names within youth (Russel et al., 2018). Given the increase in the number of youth who identify as "not exclusively straight", as clinicians we need to be ethical in the care we give. This presentation will allow clinicians and future clinicians a foundation of affirming care, and discussion around how it impacts the counseling field.

Learning Objectives:
1.. Explore definitions of gender identity and sexual orientation.
2. Discuss societal norms, cultural factors, and intersectionalities that impact the queer community.
3. Navigate current ethical codes and how affirming care impacts the counseling field. Resources will also be given to participants.
