Event Description
The convergence of neurodiversity and trans identities is a surprisingly common occurrence. Counselors can increase their competence working with transgender populations by having an awareness of how neurodiversity impacts this population. Presenters will share key characteristics of neurodivergent (with a focus on Autism and ADHD) trans populations about which counselors should be aware, and how counselors can support common issues that emerge for these populations in the counseling relationship. Participants will learn about basic counseling strategies to support neurodiverse trans populations, with goals, knowledge, practical tools, and strategies that can help support these clients through the counseling relationship.
Learning Objectives:
Objective 1: Participants will learn about neurodiversity (with a primary focus on Autism Spectrum Disorder and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder), and the common convergence of neurodiversity and transgender identities. Participants will learn about the clinical significance of neurodivergence in trans populations, including common presenting issues.
Objective 2: We will also explore ways to support the counseling relationship with neurodiverse, transgender clients through goals, knowledge, action and skills.
Objective 3: Myths and assumptions will be explored and discussion and questions about how to best support this population will occur.
