Program Title: When counseling and culture intersect: Adapting counseling practices to respond to the cultural needs of African American children and families.
Program Summary: African American children and families are disproportionately impacted by socioenvironmental factors. These factors greatly increase risks factors and impact overall psychological adjustment, increasing the need for therapeutic interventions. However, counselors often face limitations adapting counseling practices with cultural populations. This presentation will help attendees identify therapeutic needs and counseling practices specific for working with African American children and families. Attendees will learn strategies to understand African American clients and implement culturally responsive counseling practices.
